SecureClient help documentation

SecureClient information

In preparation for your exam, you will need to download the SecureClient app and ensure that it is working on your device correctly. If you have no further exams using the SecureClient, you may use the instructions at the bottom of this page to uninstall SecureClient from your laptop.

Installation instructions

SecureClient is the application you will use to take your exams. We ask that you use a personal rather than a shared laptop. A minimum screen resolution of 1024×768 is required, with at least 1GB of free disk space. See the full system requirements in the ‘Minimum specifications’ section below.

Install Windows SecureClient directly from the following link: https://btlcmscdn.blob.core.windows.net/secureclient/My/SecureClientDriverInstaller.msi

If you experience any technical issues with the installation of SecureClient, please review the help and guidance on this page or use the chat service on this page to resolve the issues.

NOTE: SecureClient is designed to provide a secure environment for your exam and may prevent other applications from being available during the exam. If you require assistive technologies, please speak with your exam administrator prior to your exam to ensure that appropriate accommodations can be made available.

Important information before taking your exam

Close unnecessary applications

  • Close all non-essential applications running on your device.
  • Pay special attention to applications running in the background.

Disable Windows text suggestions

  • In Windows 11, navigate to Settings > Time & language > Typing and disable the Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard, Multilingual text suggestionsAutocorrect misspelt words, and Highlight misspelt words settings.
  • In Windows 10, these settings can be found in Settings > Devices > Typing.

Update operating system

  • Ensure your operating system is up to date by checking for the latest updates.
  • Turn off automatic updates during the exam session to avoid disruptions.

Power and battery

  • Ensure your laptop is connected to a power source, even if it is fully charged.
  • Adjust your power settings to prevent your device from going to sleep during the exam.

Mouse selection

  • We recommend using a wired mouse rather than a wireless or Bluetooth mouse, as wireless devices may interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.

Test instructions

Validation test instructions

Use SecureClient to take the required validation test well in advance of your live exam. The validation test will provide an opportunity to make sure your laptop works with SecureClient and to familiarize yourself with SecureClient and with the types of questions you might see on your live exam (you do not need to answer the validation test questions correctly).

NOTE: If you do not take the validation test, you might not be allowed to participate in the live exam. The mock exam should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

You will receive an email from your administrator with details of your validation test. Refer to this email for your eight-digit keycode and, if applicable, six-digit PIN. You should write down your keycode and PIN before you open SecureClient because your computer will be securely locked down during the validation test.

To take the validation test, complete the following steps:

Screenshot of the SecureClient keycode screen
  1. Open SecureClient.
  2. Enter the eight-digit keycode you received by email and select OK to download the validation test content.
NOTE: The practice test option available on this screen may contain question types and features that may not be included in your live exam. To prepare for the live exam, continue with the steps below to complete the validation test instead.
  3. Your name and exam details will be shown. If they are correct, select Confirm. Otherwise, select Cancel and contact your exam administrator for assistance.
  4. Review the Terms of Use for the validation test, then check the box next to “I accept these terms” and select Continue.
  5. Review the instructions provided, then select Continue the Test.
  6. If asked, enter the six-digit PIN you received by email.
  7. When you are finished taking the validation test, select Finish Test. You will be asked to confirm that you want to finish the test.
  8. You will see confirmation that your validation test has been successfully uploaded. Select Exit Test to close SecureClient.

Live exam instructions

When you are instructed to take your exam on exam day, your exam administrators will ask you to open SecureClient and enter your exam keycode.

NOTE: Please ensure that your device is connected to the internet prior to opening SecureClient.

To take the live exam, complete the following steps:

  2. Enter the eight-digit keycode you received by email (your exam administrator may provide this to you again when entering the exam room) and select OK.
  3. Your name and exam details will be shown. If they are correct, select Confirm. Otherwise, select Cancel and contact your exam administrator for assistance.
  4. Review the Terms of Use for the exam, then check the box next to “I accept these terms” and select Continue.
  5. Review the instructions provided, then select Continue the Test.
  6. If provided to you by the exam administrator, enter the six-digit PIN.
  7. When you are finished taking your exam, select Finish Test. You will be asked to confirm that you want to finish the test.
  8. You will see confirmation that your exam has been successfully uploaded. Select Exit Test to close SecureClient. If you do not see confirmation of a successful upload, this may be due to a lack of internet connection. In this event, please wait for your exam administrator to assist.

NOTE: During your exam, your responses are saved frequently to your device. If an internet connection is available, your responses are also frequently uploaded throughout and at the conclusion of your exam.

Firewalls and proxy servers

If your internet connection has a firewall or proxy server in place, you may need to allow access to the following URLs (you may need to contact your system administrator to request this):

In progress/user disconnected tests

After a candidate has taken a test, tests appear as In Progress/User disconnected in the Invigilate screen despite the tests actually having been completed.

This is caused by a lost or slow internet connection when the test was submitted by the candidate.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps below.

  1. Check there is an internet connection available.
  2. Relaunch SecureClient on the computer used by the candidate.
  3. The result should then be uploaded. You can check if this is successful by viewing the Invigilate screen.
